How to Make a Maxi Dress

It’s about time I share some pattern making with you guys 🙂

I made this dress for hubby and I first wedding anniversary trip in Boracay ♥  This is very easy. beginner sewer will definitely love this project 🙂

Let’s get this started already! The image  below will be the pattern guide and the instructions.

Maxi Dress Pattern Guide

You can readily do this on your fabric. I used 2 yards,60 width fabric and fold it (into 1/4) cross wise and then length wise.

1 – Will be the starting point

1-2 – is the length of your maxi dress (mine is 36 inches)

1-3 – is the full width of your fabric (mine is 60 width). Note that this will be the length on the sides of your dress. 100 – 120 width fabric is the best option.

2-4 -same as 1-3

1-5 – is 4 inches or more, it can be up to 5 inches if you have broad shoulders

1-6 – is 4 inches (front) and 1/2 inch (back)or more, this will be the neckline so you can adjust it according to your prefered measurements.

5-7 – is 2 inches or more

7-8 – is 1/2 of your arm hole measurement

This is how your fabric should look after cutting it.

If you have a serger, just sew the edge to neat it out. If none, then you can sew 1/4″ seam(fold 1/8″ twice).

And there you have it, an instant maxi dress for the summer fun 🙂 accessorize it with your favorite belt. I sew a thin string to tie on the waist, but in below picture, my sis Krisette use it on her head 🙂

Thanks to my friends Gino and Earle for the wonderful pictures.

I hope you like this post 🙂 I will appreciate some comments. If you happen to make this project, please leave a comment with your link so I can feature you here ♥

Happy blogging and sewing!

Looks like a great dress! Gorgeous! I’m a novice sewer, and I’m going to try this out this week – need some maxi dresses for the hot summer!
One question – did you sew along the sides to the bottom, or just strategically place it with your belt?
    Thanks for sharing!

Hi Kate, you don’t need to sew the sides cause the fabric will fall in to place. However if you are using 60 width fabric, expect the sides to be shorter. You can use 100-120 width for better proportion 🙂

I hope this helps! Watch for more future tutorials.
